The Daily Human – The Indian Civilisation – weak or resilient ?

For the longest time, I would almost feel ashamed about certain aspects of our ancient Indian civilisation. How could so many invaders come and plunder us so many times ? How could we be subjugated and ruled by so many foreigners for so long ? Why were we so weak and timid and divided ? Why weren’t we more of a martial and warrior people ?

And then I randomly ended up reading the work of Anibal Quijano. He’s a Peruvian sociologist who’s done a lot of work in the area of colonialism. He’s coined the term coloniality ( more about it sometime in the future ) He made a great point that while colonialism completely wiped out the native cultures of Africa and America, most of the Asian cultures and civilisations survived it. Most of them including our own Indian civilisation and it’s native culture and heritage proved resilient enough to survive all the colonial efforts to decimate it.

This context completely changed my worldview. I am no longer ashamed of anything. I am super proud of being part of this great, resilient civilisation. We will not only survive everything that the neo-colonialists of the modern world throw at us; we will one day regain our past glory and our rightful position in this world.
