Daily Human – Republic Day – 26/01/22

I watched the Republic Day parade on TV after a long long time. Did it more for my kids who know far less about India, its history, its defence forces, its different states etc – than I did at their get. Lots of questions from them so I think it went well.

Some of the things I really loved.

The no of females in the fighting units that marched in the parade. Made me very proud.

My favourite tableaus were from Punjab and Haryana.

Was interesting to see Haryana highlight their sporting achievements. Don’t ever remember a sporting theme in the parade. So it was quite innovative. Clearly shows that the Haryana govt is focused on sports and the results are there for everyone to see. Well done Haryana.

There was a lot of debate (on the pseudo intellectual groups that I am a part of) that the BJP govt had deliberately left out Punjab, Bengal and Kerala. So it was good to see them eat their words once the Punjab tableau appeared. I have been a little worried about the developments in Punjab over the last couple of years. The possible return of Khalistani elements, the events of the last Republic Day and the farmer protests, and all the stories about religious conversion and Punjabi youth falling prey to drugs.

So it was so heartening to see Punjab in its full glory during the parade. Starting with the Sikh Light Infantry marching proudly. Then came the tableau highlighting the state’s glorious contribution to this country’s freedom struggle. And finally there were the bhangra dancers ( more on that later ) There was no attempt to spite the BJP govt. This is the Punjab I admire and it was wonderful to be reminded about everything that is special about the state and its amazing people.

The combined dance performance at the end of the parade was my favourite part. Showcased the rich diversity of this country. Initially they danced as individual parts, each showcasing the beauty of their dance form. And then they danced together to the same tune. It was unity in diversity in the truest sense. It was beautiful. I am no dance connoisseur but even I could appreciate how they fitted together to create such a harmonious collage of colour and movement.

Happy Republic Day.
